The Mossburn Vintage Casks range are a collection of Single Malt Scotch Whiskies each issuing from a strictly limited and select batch of casks. Each numbered release will only ever yield a finite number of bottles. While this means that we can never replicate the particular character of this Single Malt, it also offers an opportunity to sample what we believe to be an exceptional example of the whisky made by one of Scotland’s most distinguished distilleries.
With its six smallish stills and matching wooden worm tub condensers standing in serried ranks, the Glen Elgin Distillery looks as well designed as it is functional. The wooden wash backs provide a clearer wort for a relatively slow distillation and subsequently a weighty spirit with plenty of character. With Ben Riach, Longmorn, Mannochmore and Glenlossie Distilleries all within a mile there must be something decidedly special about this tiny corner of Speyside. At cask strength, the spirit needs a dash of water to bring out the light oaky vanilla notes, allspice and a little dried orange. The palate opens out with some slightly forthright wood which influences the fruit and some soft malty sweetness with a little fire at the finish.
This select release has been bottled at cask strength, without colouring or chill filtration, to showcase the purest expression of the Single Malt’s character.
